Overview

The committee begins in the year 1526, just after the signing of the Treaty of Madrid and France’s humiliating defeat in the Italian War of 1521 by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Alarmed by the dominating presence of the Holy Roman Empire on Italian soil, Pope Clement VII has proposed an alliance of France, the Papal States, and other Italian city-states to curb the influence of Charles V on Italian affairs, known as the League of Cognac. The fate of this tenuous alliance will determine the fate of all Italy.
